“The earth laughs in flowers”

… a wonderful quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson.
But what does it actually mean?

This quote, I discovered, is taken from part of Emerson’s poem ‘Hamatreya’.
Here is part of that poem:

…EARTHS SONG

“They called me theirs,
Who so controlled me;
Yet every one
Wished to stay, and is gone.
How am I theirs,
If they cannot hold me,
But I hold them?”

It explains that the earth is laughing at humans for believing we own the land and trying to control it.  How we will one day vanish and also become the earth as when we pass away the earth beholds us. Inevitably the earth owns us and we are but part of it!

In my view our time here on earth is fleeting, all but a few short breaths.
So let us make it worth our while and work ‘with’ the land, with nature rather then constantly trying to control it.

Today this poem rings true in my ears as men and women try to recon with the power of nature in a myriad of ways. When will they see their plight is futile!

How many sand bags do humans think can stop a tsunami? Do people really think that they can stop the flow of lava from a ravenous volcano, like the one on La Palma in 2021?

I join the earth as she laughs in flowers,
divinely dancing in the winds of the storm,
as each individual flower bursts open,
my heart blossoms as the petals form.

To one and all I welcome you in,
to my garden glorious flourishing full,
of colour and laughter as the seasons pass,
with gloom and darkness in the winter lull.

To join one day the compost pile,
to make of myself oh what you will,
a joyous chorus of bugs and worms,
as I be one with the earth so still.

~Juliette Noske
